Life In The Garden - Genesis

  1. Describe a time when you were in need of rest and how it felt when you finally got to have a moment of rest.

  2. In the beginning of Genesis 2, we read that God rested from his work. How does this example of rest remind us of our need for Christ? Consider Galatians 4:9-11, Colossians 2:16-17, and Hebrews 4:9-11.

  3. How does it affect your outlook on your everyday tasks when you remember that work was a part of all the creation that God said was good? What do other scriptures say about work and its purpose or how it should be done?

  4. Genesis 1 refers to God as Elohim, or God Almighty. In Genesis 2, the personal name LORD God, or Yahweh, is used. Which of God’s words and actions in chapter 2 seem more personal compared to chapter 1?

  5. Do you find you relate more to God as almighty or as personal? What experiences in your life have influenced your relationship with God in this way?

  6. What roles and restrictions did God give to Adam and Eve in Genesis 2? What was God’s purpose in this?

  7. How do you think Adam and Eve each felt about their God-given roles and restrictions? Can you think of one role or restriction God has placed on you? Recognizing that God is good, what makes that role or restriction feel difficult? At the same time, how is it ultimately good?
